Habitat for Humanity - Houses
Iqaluit, Nunavut
Completed in 2013 and 2014
This project involved designing and constructing two affordable 124 m² (1340 ft²) homes in Iqaluit, Nunavut for Habitat for Humanity. The second build was redesigned to accommodate a barrier free occupant. The design prioritized simplicity and cost-effectiveness to address the challenges of the Arctic climate and quadrupled material costs. The compact layout maximizes usable space while remaining constructible by volunteers. This initiative provides affordable housing solutions for families in Iqaluit, demonstrating the impact of collaborative design and community involvement in overcoming environmental and economic obstacles. The project successfully addressed extreme climate conditions, including permafrost, high winds, and significant daylight variation, while remaining sensitive to the high cost of materials and the reliance on volunteer labor. Ultimately, this project highlights how thoughtful design can create sustainable and affordable housing in challenging environments.
